Complementary Courses

Options 2022-23

Grade 7

Option A:

Music: Option fee - $20
Have you always wanted to learn how to play songs by your favourite artists and more? In this half year option we will do just that as we explore our own voices and a variety of instruments including keyboard, drum kit, ukulele, guitar, and barred instruments. Come prepared to explore a variety of songs as we learn about chord progressions, beats, melodies and more. We will create our own covers, work together as a musical ensemble, and maybe even begin to learn a little bit about songwriting!

American Sign Language: No fee
American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Culture Level 1 offers students foundational knowledge necessary to develop skills communicating in ASL. The course also develops knowledge and appreciation of Deaf culture. Learning ASL encourages students to take risks in exploring ways to challenge themselves, collaborate with others and think critically.

Foods: Option fee - $65
Students will focus on obtaining background information about key food practices to ensure the safety of ourselves and others. We will then move on to practical experiences in the Foods lab where we will create healthy snacks, light meals and desserts.  Throughout the semester we will also explore proper nutrition and incorporate quality choices in the foods we prepare.
 
Sewing: Option fee - $45
Students will be introduced to basic sewing equipment and both hand sewing and machine sewing techniques. Students will gain knowledge of sewing machines, pressing equipment, and fabrics/various yarns/textile arts and crafts and their care. The course will include the assembly of projects using a pattern.

Option B:

Sports Performance: No fee
Sports Performance allows you to further your physical and tactical abilities in all areas of sport through multifunctional training. This course combines both sport and traditional fitness activities to help further you athletic performance.

MakerSpace: Option fee - $25
Students interested in exploring the world of engineers, other maker professions, or just have an entrepreneurial spirit will appreciate this Makerspace program. Students will learn the fundamentals of design, project planning, 3D printing, coding and robotics. The work will be hands-on and range from working with paper and pencil, drawing and 3D modeling software, electronic components, wheels, motors and many other bits and pieces. Students will also collaborate with other team members to problem-solve, design and construct various items, and complete challenges.

Baking and Pastry: Option fee - $60
Baking and pastry option will allow students to explore different baking techniques used in both sweet and savory baked goods. Students will focus on basics such as kitchen safety, etiquette and food preparation. Through both theoretical and practical applications students will further their knowledge of the science of baking!

Art: Option fee - $25
Students will be exposed to different media and have the opportunity to refine their skills in drawing and composition. Through a series of challenges, students will learn steps in the design process, elements of design, how to critique or assess compositions created by themselves or others. Students will keep a sketchbook and will also collect their artwork in a portfolio so that they can keep a record of their progress over the course.


Grade 8 

Option A:

Leadership: Option fee - $60
If you are passionate about making a difference within this class, your school, and the extended community, then this course is for you! Leadership focuses on topics such as; qualities and roles of leaders, communication skills, conflict resolution, team dynamics, and team building. As a student in Leadership, you will learn about yourself, what you are capable of and what you can accomplish when you set your mind to it. You will ultimately grow as a team player, a creative thinker, an effective communicator, and a capable citizen. As a part of this course, you will have the opportunity to shape school spirit and culture, gain experience planning events within the school and volunteering within the greater community. This option is fueled by student ideas and initiative.
Examples of events can be: Anything But a Backpack Day,  Halloween Week, Touch of Class

Games: Strategy and Design: Option fee - $20
The Games: Strategy & Design option will provide Grade 9 junior high students with the time and opportunity to explore their interests beyond the scope of the regular curriculum.  The course will enable students to engage in activities with card games, board games and other strategic exercises, allowing them to analyze their structures and objectives. This option supports students in the development of a range of competencies, including critical thinking, communication and creativity. Students taking this course will also be going on a field trip to a local game cafe where they will be exposed to a large selection and variety of games to explore.


Option B:

Environmental Outdoor Education: Option fee - $85
Environmental Outdoor Education 9 option is a hands-on, activity-based course that introduces students to appreciate, respect, and use the environment around us. Through a variety of both indoor and outdoor activities, students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to develop lifestyle strategies, including willingness to try new things, personal engagement, preparedness, and co-operation, that foster contact with the natural world. This course will encourage responsibility for local and global environments, and encourage living in harmony with others.  Participating in experiences during all seasons, everyone is expected to be prepared for all weather conditions, and to take responsibility for organizing equipment and clean-up of equipment/facilities after use.  Any damages rendered to equipment due to inappropriate use may involve a replacement cost passed on to the parent or guardian of the student and may affect the future privileges of the student.
